“Are you listening now?"
Starting from this simple yet intriguing question of Pauline Oliveros, these 6 sessions are a chance to centre our body and breath, open our ears and direct our attention to the serious business of play.
Deep Listening ® is a practice developed by Oliveros and her Deep Listening colleagues – in particular Heloise Gold and IONE - over many years. Expect to energise and centre your body, explore Sonic and Listening Meditations, use your voice and/or sound-making objects/instruments to engage in Pauline’s deeply democratic text scores, accessible to musically-trained and non-musicians alike.
Pauline says: “Deep Listening is listening in every possible way, to everything it’s possible to hear, no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one’s own thoughts, as well as musical sounds.
Hearing represents the primary sense organ – hearing happens involuntarily. Listening is a voluntary process, directing attention to what is heard, gathering meaning, interpreting and deciding on action.
Two modes of listening are available – focal and global. Focal listening garners detail from any sound and global listening brings expansion through the whole field of sound. When both modes are utilized and balanced, there is connection with all that there is.”
That connection is where we are attempting to meet during these sessions, and from that space expound the “compassion and love” which “are the core motivating principles guiding creative decision making and our actions in the world.” (Pauline Oliveros).
Meeting in Zoom, together we curate a space that is playful, gentle, open. We look to soften our edges and boundaries, and courageously give voice to our ideas. Lifting off judgement (not discernment) we use movement and sound to improvise, explore, to co-create.
If this sounds intriguing, come and join us! An international community built through and after lockdown, and this series of 6 sessions is our re-gathering after an extended break.
Requirements: No prior experience is necessary to join the sessions, but a spirit of openness is encouraged. The bodywork is gentle and adaptable. Wear clothes you can move in. Join with enough space to swing your arms, and a comfortable place to sit for meditation. Bring a journal for your own personal use.
“I always feel energised after the sessions and feel that I now belong to a new community. I enjoy the mix of bodywork, sound explorations, meditation and movement.” Will E
“Incredibly enjoyable and enriching for my soul - I look forward to being part of this community again as soon as possible.” David M
