These 5 sessions will investigate compositions between movement and voice, and working with spoken words/text. The workshops will enable participants to find precision in movement and speech, as well as clarity on intentions: enhancing the performer's ability to transit between different intentions while speaking and moving. You will gain creative tools for devising as well as processes for making, including the knowledge and experience necessary for compositions and storytelling.
The sessions will be divided into three parts:
Part one - technical work
The technical work focuses on investigating body resonators (Grotowski), whilst finding clarity and precision on body movement (Laban, contemporary dance techniques, Grotowski).
Part two - exercises on 'body-voice contradictions'
In the second part, Gabriela Flarys will teach exercises focusing on the dynamics of paradox. A range of contradictions will be explored as performative compositions as well as tools for devising. Additionally, the work on paradoxes will be a pathway for cultivating an energetic presence. These classes will also explore playfulness, connection to bodily sensation, dynamic qualities, triangular relationship between the performer with a partner/object and an audience, fluidity of speech, embodiment of words, dialogue between body parts, and clarity on key aspects such as tension, intention, and attention.
Part three - lead creative research
As a third part these workshops also provide a space for lab research. The participants will be invited to bring up texts and ideas, and play with them through some of the exercises. The aim is to build creative material that can be shared as a work-in-progress on the last session of the course.
All levels and backgrounds are welcome: actors, performers, dancers, and those interested in playing with the body and the voice. All the exercises can be adapted to suit each participant's level.
