In a world obsessed with the visual, where ‘I see’ equally means ‘I understand’, this course engages with listening as a way into deep connections. During the sessions we will engage with the 3 modalities – Moving, Sounding, Dreaming – as conceived and developed by sonic pioneer Pauline Oliveros (and others) in the practice of Deep Listening®
In her words, ‘Deep Listening is a multi-dimensional practice created with the intention of heightening awareness of sound and sounding to connect profoundly with sensations, feelings, memories and dreams. The ultimate intention is the expansion of the consciousness of listening.’
Meeting in Zoom, together we curate a space that is playful, gentle, open. We look to soften our edges and boundaries, and courageously give voice to our ideas. Lifting off judgement (not discernment) we use movement and sound to improvise, explore, to co-create.
If this sounds intriguing, come and join us! An international community has been building
through lockdown, and this series of 6 sessions is our re-gathering after a summer break.
Each session will involve bodywork drawn from Qi Gong and T’ai Chi, breathwork, listening meditation, and exploration of the Sonic Meditations and other pieces composed by Oliveros. No musical expertise is needed to engage with these deeply democratic and satisfying pieces – however an interest and willingness to engage with others and share sounds, words, thoughts, dreams is necessary to get the most benefit from this connecting and stimulating practice. The Zoom medium is explored in a creative and playful way, and Breakout rooms give space for smaller group work.
No prior experience is necessary to join the sessions, but a spirit of openness is encouraged. The bodywork is gentle and adaptable. Wear clothes you can move in. Join with enough space to swing your arms, and a comfortable place to sit for meditation. Bring a journal for your own personal use.
After a session expect to feel like you have:
* Fresh EARs and a new approach to hEARing
* Released spent stale energy and replenished with fresh energy
* A strong connection to your bodymind
* Connected into a group and expressed yourself, creatively and playfully
* Explored new approaches to sounding/moving together
* Performed some of Pauline Oliveros' text scores
* Had FUN!
