Where words fail, music speaks.
- Hans Christian Andersen
I personally believe that through music anything is possible. To describe a wonderful piece of music in words is near impossible but I’m sure we have all had those goosebump moments where our hair stands on end, perhaps you have even been moved to tears? Our greatest adventures are usually accompanied by a soundtrack. Music can transport us, be used as a tool for expression and help us through our darkest days.
Through this 6-week course we shall spend time exploring the idea that meditation and music are fruits picked from the same tree. We shall spend time listening to and exploring music written for the purpose of guiding you through meditation. This music will help you to better your focus, develop your concentration, and improve your visualisation skills with the aid of music. Through the practise you will gain a fresh approach to meditation, a clearer understanding to the relationship of meditation and music, and a stronger connection to music.
We shall also spend time exploring and discussing musical ideas, styles and theories in the hope of deepening and influencing the way you approach music. Through an exploration of new sound worlds, you will have the opportunity to expand your musical knowledge and tastes. We will listen to a combination of new compositions, spiritual music and chants, Western and Eastern classical music, Binaural Beats, Gandharva Veda music and more. You are invited to join mediated discussions about performances with spiritual connections such as the Spanish art of flamenco and the search of ‘Duende’ as well as John Cage’s search of ‘egoless music’, and the presence of silence within music through the Germanic style Wandelweiser.
In a non-judgemental space you will be invited to share your personal experiences with musical compositions, performances and styles that hold a special place in your soul. If you have access and would like to perform your own music to the group, you are invited to use this as an open space to do so. This course requires no experience in meditation or musical understanding, simply an open-mind and open-heart. We shall create a safe space to share, discuss and communicate through the ancient language of music. I look forward to exploring the infinite world of music with you.
