Full Description:

Since lockdown began, we have been building a community of people committed to connecting together within Zoom to investigate the practice of Deep Listening® as envisaged by Pauline Oliveros, and beginning to find our own shared community improvisatory language, sounding, moving and playing together from a position of listening to each other as deeply as we can. If this sounds interesting to you, these 6 open-to-all sessions will give you a chance to try it out, or equally to continue in your Deep Listening practice. Drop-in tickets are available, although we encourage you to consider it a course and commit to all 6. Deep Listening is after all a practice, and it gives back the more you engage with it, so carve out some Sunday evening ‘me-time’ and come and play!

During the sessions, we hold space for each other, creating the conditions for self and group care. A session involves breath and bodywork; Listening or other Meditation; activities to promote connection within the Zoom framework; exploration of Pauline Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations and other text scores; sounding, singing, dancing and playing together in open or guided improvisations.

So what is Deep Listening?

Composer and sonic pioneer Pauline Oliveros, founder of the practice of Deep Listening, describes it as ‘listening in as many ways as possible to everything that can possibly be heard all of the time’.  There’s more to listening than meets the ear!

Adapted for the zoom environment, each session will involve bodywork drawn from Qi Gong and T’ai Chi, breathwork, listening meditation, and exploration of the Sonic Meditations and other pieces composed by Oliveros. No musical expertise is needed to engage with these deeply democratic and satisfying pieces – however an interest and willingness to engage with others and share sounds, words, thoughts, dreams is necessary to get the most benefit from this connecting and stimulating practice.  The Zoom medium is explored in a creative and playful way, and Breakout rooms give space for smaller group work.
For more information on Deep Listening® visit the Center for Deep Listening webpages: https://www.deeplistening.rpi.edu/

Requirements:

No prior experience is necessary to join the sessions. A spirit of openness and lifting off judgement (not discernment) is encouraged. The bodywork is gentle and adaptable. Wear clothes you can move in. Join with enough space to swing your arms, and a comfortable place to sit for meditation. Bring a journal for your own personal use.
