Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a radically gentle, permissive and playful approach to dance and movement that has evolved from the simple principle that when we are releasing physical tension, we can move with greater freedom, power and clarity. SRT stimulates various aspects of the body-mind by intertwining kinaesthetic and sensory awareness with imagination in different states of movement and of rest. Classes combine immersive poetic imagery; hands on partner work and touch; resonant sound and music; sighing and breath; free dancing; deep rest; moving, writing and drawing. Unconscious holding patterns can be released, supporting a transformational somatic process towards new technical qualities of alignment, economy and buoyancy as well as creative play. Participants are supported to cultivate an increasing sensitivity to their own physical and imaginative experience, and can develop new possibilities of ease and freedom in movement and in life.
SRT was developed from the early 1970s onward by US dancer Joan Skinner, who had performed with the Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham companies before embarking on her own exploration of movement as a somatic process. She combined aspects of ideokinesis and Alexander Technique with creative dance practices.
This course approaches SRT from the point of view of Lizzy Le Quesne's practice-based PhD 'A Dance of Becoming', highlighting implicit and explicit qualities of Skinner Releasing that address embodied softening, disarming and emancipation. You are invited to participate in the complete series of classes that introduce the foundational concepts and practices of SRT. There are 15 classes in total delivered in two blocks during May / June (8 classes) and after the summer holidays in September / October (7 classes).
The classes are suitable for performers of all kinds and all levels of experience as well as anyone who wants to find more ease and freedom in movement. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a warm layer to put on or take off during periods of movement and rest.
