Navigating through the psycho-somatic loop; the body-mind relationship is vital to health, with better understanding of the inter-related nature of these features we may be more able to become agents for our physical and mental health. A year of riding the corona-coaster has left many people adrift, confused and angry. Understanding the blood-chemistry behind feeling bad (and also feeling good) returns a semblance of control. This session has three broad sections:
Firstly, we will examine how the mind/body, body/mind originates at a chemical level, and how those chemicals have a profound effect upon physical and mental health, emotions and relationships. We'll explore how what is happening at an individual level is also happening at a social, national and even international level.
Second section will take the form of a workshop where we will hold a mirror up to ourselves and ask some honest and challenging questions, driven by a sense of curious compassion (for ourselves and for others). We will consider if our emotions are ‘authentic’, or driven by deeper and harder to acknowledge forces within and without.
The final output of the session will be to draft a letter to a future self; we will consider what have been our ‘go to’ actions and devices in the past year, we will consider what are the things we need to leave behind; we will articulate the things we want to hold on to. We will consider the revelations of these strange times, and think about where we want them to go.
Knowledge; understanding and reclaiming the term ‘Psycho-Somatic’ to consider the intimate relationship between the mind and the body. Considering the biochemical basis of many emotions, how we respond to acute and chronic anxiety – very important at a time when the background ‘mood-music’ of society is chronically anxious. Also recognising that there are many flavours of stress, some are toxic, but others are affirmative, enhancing and rewarding – we need to understand this in the context of physical and mental health.
Honest reflection; taking time to consciously and compassionately examine how we are conducting ourselves. Looking at the possibility of projection and transference clouding our emotional and physical responses.
The key output from considering these features will be to generate a letter to our future selves, this may be about using affirmation to produce a change, it may also be a ‘compass-point’ in the future and in a years’ time (maybe at the next Health and Wellth Festival) we can use our letters as a ‘back-bearing’ to how we were then (and where we are going in the future).
