"Within a Day" has been an ongoing project of Thingamajigs Performance Group. It is an opportunity to spend a full day with another practitioner in order to share work, make new work, learn from each other, eat and drink together, and invite the public to witness the results. Past projects have yielded: a record release with composer Robert Moran, the performance of an evening length work with composer Pauline Oliveros, and new collaborative relationships with artists such as practitioner-scholar Alex Boyd from Intercultural Roots and bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa among others. After a year-long absence from making music and visual art together due to Covid-19, and the geographical displacement of one bandmember due to climate change, we have decided to have a "Within a Day" performance collaboration with, well, ourselves, and to share the resulting work with the Intercultural Roots community. You might consider it a six-hour long "family reunion" with the members of TPG, and a tribute to the resilience of human social connectivity through difficult times. Expect an immersive experience with multiple centers of activity where audience is free to drop in and out, to sleep or to hang on every note, to watch the visual components or to close their eyes. It will be a great place to wander around in your mind and take a break from the doing of things, and get around to the being of things.
Sam Lefebvre of the East Bay Express in Oakland, CA had this to say of our 2014 collaboration with Pauline Oliveros, "On Friday evening, Oliveros sat monastically, a cardboard tube crossing the ends of a red scarf that rested in her lap. The Thingamajigs, stationed in the four concrete protrusions on the building’s second level, started ringing glasses at 7:30 p.m. and the crowd chatted through it for about seven minutes. A flicker of the lights hushed the audience, and the glasses’ peculiarly resonant trill mingled with rustling jackets. It felt liberating to move around the museum, nestling up close to a ringing glass or wandering through the gallery’s various nooks." We hope provoke in you a similar sense of liberation.
