
Dr Andrea Maciel is a British–Brazilian performer, teacher, academic, and director. Her artistic and scholarly work explores the extension of theatre laboratory practices into the realms of arts for health, wellbeing, and social transformation. She is a Lecturer in Contemporary Performance at the Department of Contemporary Performance,Manchester School of Theatre, Manchester Metropolitan University.
Andrea holds a PhD in PerformingArts from the Federal University of Brazil and was a Visiting Scholar at NewYork University. With over twenty years of experience in physical theatre training and somatic–healing approaches for dancers, actors, and bodywork practitioners, her practice bridges embodied research, pedagogy, and community engagement.
She is a core member of the Cross-Pollination Platform of Theatre, where she co-creates collaborative embodied research projects, and serves as Artistic Director of InterculturalRoots. Her passion for connecting art, healing, and performance in public spaces is embodied in initiatives such as the Intercultural Roots: Arts for Healthand Social Change programme, the Metamorphosis Project, and the Health& WELLth Festival.
