Dr Deepa Mahadevan is a research practitioner. She practices as a performer and teacher of the Neo-classical dance form called Bharatanatyam originating from South India. She is the founder and artistic director of Tiruchitrambalam School of Dance. She has trained over 200 students in Bharatanatyam. She has conceived, choreographed and conducted over 30 evening-length solo dance recitals for her students. For over three decades she has been performing Bharatanatyam predominantly as a soloist but also collaborates with artists to present group work. She is currently based out of NY. Her research examines the vectors of caste, class, sex, gender and religion in the performance of Bharatanatyam dance. She is specifically interested in the ways in which these vectors have been translating into the aesthetics of the dance form since the early twentieth century. Her teaching practice is an important aspect of her research where she delves deeper into the manner in which Bharatanatyam aesthetics takes shape in the techniques of transmission, specifically in the Indian diaspora space in North America and generally in classrooms all over the world.
