Assessment in Traditional Chinese Medicine: Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis and Auricular Points

Part 5 of 6: Auricular - Introduction to Auricular Assessment, a diagnostic technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Theory and technique are presented.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses the tongue and pulse as critical components of health assessment. The tongue is the sole muscle we can visualize that is not covered by skin. Dr Feng will provide the foundational principles of Tongue Diagnosis: length, size, shape, markings, color, amount of saliva and coating. The tongue is an initial indicator of health and it’s condition correlates with TCM diagnoses. Participants will learn the technique and practice with slides of typical tongues as well as the opportunity to do assessments live with Dr Feng.

Pulse diagnosis is a second assessment technique in TCM.  The attributes of the pulse provide important health information.  There are over 127 different types of pulses. Most practitioners use 12-20 and it requires practice and skill to differentiate among them.  Dr Feng will teach the fundamental principles of pulse assessment and diagnosis. The rate, depth and force of the pulse will be addressed and associated with health states. Participants will have audio exposure to types of pulses and learn how to assess their own pulses, as well  as pulses of others.

Auricular acupuncture is a system of both diagnosis and treatment by using the ear. In TCM the ear is seen as a micro view or map of the entire body. Specific points in the ear can be used to assess health and to treat conditions with acupressure and acupuncture. Dr Feng will discuss this mapping of the ear to the meridians and provide techniques for diagnosis and treatment.
