Dialoguing between embodiment, ritual and resistance, Rhythms of Resistance undertakes an artistic survey of the multiplicity of ways in which the performance aesthetics of resistance offered by Capoeira and Vogue functions as rhythmic strategies of liberation for Black, LGBTQIAPN+ and other historically oppressed bodies. We believe that the opposite of dispossessed is embodied, positioning the body as key to unlocking the transformative potential of these practices of transgressive self-authorship. Offline and online provocations, augmented by digital innovation, will culminate in the production of an art film and an original sonograph, accompanied by an educational series and codex of text anthologising the process. Following a successful first phase in Brazil, we are thrilled to bring the second phase of this groundbreaking collaboration to London.

Rhythms of Resistance: Embodiment and Liberation – A Three-Day Gathering at The Place, London
Dates: 18 – 20 July 2025

Day 1: 18 July – Embodied Queer Liminality

The first day of our gathering is dedicated to exploring the concept of "Embodied Queer Liminality" through a series of dynamic workshops. Artists from Intercultural Roots and beyond, whose practices deeply engage with queer and LGBTQIAPN+ issues, will facilitate an exchange focusing on queer bodies in transit.

Schedule:

15:00–16:00 – Burlesque-Cabaret Workshop with Fernanda Mandagará: Join Brazilian actress and cabaret performer Fernanda Mandagará as she leads an investigation into queer expressions through embodied affects. This workshop offers a unique blend of burlesque and cabaret, inviting participants to explore their own expressive potential.

16:10–17:10 – Fluid Tango Session with Manuela Benini: Choreographer and activist Manuela Benini presents a fluid Tango session that bridges studio practice with public space. This session expands on fluidity in gender expression through dance, encouraging participants to find freedom and expression within movement.

17:20–18:30 – A Carnival of Emotions with Almiro Andrade: Black Queer Latinx actor, director, and dramaturg Almiro Andrade concludes the day with an exploration of melodramatic structures as tools for personal development and gender-fluid storytelling. Discover how emotional landscapes can be navigated and expressed through performative techniques.

18:30–19:00 – Closure and Group Reflections: A session for collective processing and sharing of experiences from the day's workshops, fostering connection and dialogue among participants.

Day 2: 19 July – Intersections and Resonances

Day two delves into "Intersections and Resonances," building upon the embodied experiences of the previous day. In the spirit of intertextuality and collective memory, this day features a participatory Capoeira session and a highly anticipated masterclass led by our central artist, Puma Camillê.

Schedule:

14:00–14:30 – Reflective Session: A dedicated time to revisit fragments of the previous day's embodied experiences, allowing for deeper integration and personal resonance.

14:30–16:00 – Benvindescapoeira Participatory Session with Mestra Paulinha: Engage in an inclusive Capoeira Angola session led by the renowned Brazilian master Paulinha, founder of Benvindescapoeira – an LGBTQIAPN+ inclusive Capoeira group. This session offers an opportunity to connect with the ancestral rhythms and liberating movements of Capoeira.

16:15–20:00 – Puma Camillê Masterclass: Our central artist, Puma Camillê, will facilitate an immersive masterclass. This session will engage the now-affectively entangled community in a shared practice space, shaped by the preceding workshops, diving deeper into the unique blend of Capoeira and Vogue that defines her practice.

Day 3: 20 July – Dialogues, Echoes, and Embodied Inquiry

The final day is a profound immersion into "Dialogues, Echoes, and Embodied Inquiry." It is dedicated to reflection, research, and embodied responses, culminating in a filmed conversation that captures the essence of this unique collaboration.

Activities:

Filmed Conversation: Puma Camillê and Almiro Andrade: A sensitive and powerful documentation of this encounter, a filmed conversation between our lead artist Puma Camillê and Black Queer Latinx artist Almiro Andrade, directed by filmmaker Bruno Lopez. This will capture key insights and reflections from the gathering.

Co-Creative Inquiry Session (3 hours): Participants will engage in a facilitated, co-creative inquiry exploring pressing questions central to the project:

How do we experience and embody trans-gender fluidity?

What impact do ancestral rhythms have on our bodies and affective states?

How do intertwined movement technologies shape selfhood and relationality?
